Abstract

The Brazilian migration to Spain has increased in recent years, contributing to the diversification of migration flows to the country. Since 2008 Spain has undergone a profound economic crisis, marking a turning point in the process of socio-economic integration of immigrants who had been developing since the mid-1990. This paper aims to give an overview of the employment situation of recent Brazilian immigrant population in Spain and the changes associated with economic crisis. The analysis focuses on the insertion of Brazilians in the Spanish labor market and in the Spanish social protection system, as well as the unemployment situation. The study is based on the Anuarios Estadísticos de Inmigración do Observatorio Permanente de la Inmigración (Secretaría de Estado de Inmigración y Emigración de España). The results show the important impact of the economic crisis in Brazilian male and female workers in labor market and unemployment. Moreover, there is differential employment impacts by sex, that Brazilian men are more affected by economic crisis in Spain.
