Manaus: population growth and migrations in the 90’s

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the main characteristics related to insertion of migrants in the urban area of Manaus, as well as their socio-demographic characteristics. The study used data from the demographic census of 2000, available and organized by application free Data Recovery for Small Areas by Microcomputer (REDATAM). It was verified a significant number of migrants living in the city, with total migrant population, according to the requirements of final stage in 2000, 37.2% of the population of Manaus. On the origin of migrants, it was found that migrants with previous housing in municipalities in other states, corresponding to 63.5% of total migrants, intrastate corresponds the difference with 36.5% of total migrants. Distinguish among the states with the largest number of migrants residing in Manaus, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. In respect the integration of immigrants in urban areas in Manaus, we find that the eastern portion of the city is located where most of the recent migrants, a fact which proves consistent with the greater growth of this area.
