Abstract

Since the late 1970s, evidence accumulates about the reduction in the relative weight of the main Brazilian cities, while intensifying the flow of emigrants bound for other urban centers in the country. While Belo Horizonte had maintained their regional prevalence and continued to attract significant numbers of people, coming mainly from the state, there are strong signs of spatial dispersion of population and economic activities to the interior of Minas Gerais, some strengthening regional centers. This article aims at analyzing the dynamics of migration in the Region of Influence of São Joao del-Rei, and to indicate possible relationships with the restructuring of the regional space and the central role played by São Joao del-Rei. For this purpose we used the micro data bases related to the demographic censuses of 1991 and 2000 to identify the main intercity flows using the variable migration of fixed date. The Region of Influence of Sao Joao del-Rei, despite its rather weak in terms of inventories of people, has been marked by the intensification of intra-regional migration flows. Although the linkages with other regions of the state not have been extended, the exchange of population between cities within the Region of Influence have consolidated the role of Sao Joao del-Rei with regional pole.
