Abstract

This study is part of the project “Observatório das Migrações (NEPO) – UNICAMP”. It focuses on the analysis of the interrelationships between migration in São Paulo state and northern Paraná. The analysis is based on the study of metropolitan areas in Paraná, with an emphasis in the region of Londrina. The analysis compares the following characteristics for each metropolitan region: the socio-demographic profile, the degree of urbanization, the productive diversity and the impact on economic activities of the Paraná state. The study aims  to revisit the boundaries of the metropolitan area concept, as it has been legally established on 70's. The study intends, thus contributing to the debate on the institutionalization and management of Brazilian metropolitan areas, showing how the heterogeneity of the metropolitan areas of Paraná state offer a new perspective for thinking about the issue metropolitan and regional development.
