Abstract

The institutional economics of Douglass North adopts the micro foundation conception of mental models, a systematized model of interpretation of reality that the experience reinforces the institutional rigidity to changes. And the incorporation of the theory of path dependence in its theoretical framework leads to historical determinism, neglecting that individuals change their representations of reality through experience. It is proposed in this paper to justify, from the presentation of the theoretical construct of mental models in conjunction with the theory of path dependence, affirmation of historical determinism in institutional economics of North, pointing out its inadequacy for neglecting the territory that precipitate on historical and cultural changes that enable institutional flexibility to the definition of new development paths for learning processes.
