Abstract

The way in which identities are associated with processes of environmental preservation or degradation are almost always stereotyped. Instead of looking for an identity essence that explains a given relationship pattern with the natural world, we seek to explain how our interaction patterns with the natural world are articulated with the emergence of given identities. This essay deals with the case study of gaucho identity in directed colonization in the state of Mato Grosso in the 1970s and 1980s. The quest to build an asceticism of work in a capitalist-industrial society is the driving force behind that identity and the colonization process. In some cities, this has generated a homogenizing memory of this colonization, which is both laudatory and, today, penitential.
