Abstract

Drowning is considered the main cause of infant mortality and is among the ten main causes of death in the world among children aged 5 to 14 years, which makes this topic relevant to studies on the prevention of these occurrences. The theme presented in this work aims to analyze the rates of drowning that occurred in the municipalities of the Paraná III Hydrographic Basin in the State of Paraná and the rates of drowning in the Entorno do Lago Hydrographic Basin in the State of Tocantins, in order to confirm the need to implement public policies of prevention of drowning in river basins as a new prevention strategy. To achieve this purpose, a field survey was carried out, which made use of primary sources obtained from the records of the Unified Health System (SUS) - DATASUS, which identified cases of drowning that occurred in the years 2009 - 2019 in the Paraná III Hydrographic Basin and in the Hydrographic Basin Entorno do Lago. In this sense, the research sought to prove the rates of deaths by drowning in the municipalities within the watersheds where the cases were classified in: place of death and residence of the victims. The analysis of the information obtained in the research led to the perception of the need for the participation of the Union, States and Municipalities, in a more effective and coordinated work of drowning prevention by watershed.
