Maria da Penha: an anthroponimic study of the woman's proper name that turned law

The purpose of this paper is to recover the nomination of the Law of Domestic Violence against women, in order to understand both the characteristics of this name from the point of view of Onomastics and from the legal point of view, that is, the reasons that made a Criminal Law be named with a person's proper name. Thinking about the characteristics of proper names, a study was made of the origin of the names “Maria” and “da Penha” and their incidence in Brazil. A timeline of the life story of Brazilian Maria da Penha was also built, from when she was the victim of two assassination attempts by her ex-husband, to her long national and international legal battle which ended up in a recommendation to the Brazilian State, in order to draft legislation in favor of women victims of domestic violence and. Through her struggle, Maria da Penha won the right to a symbolic reparation from the country, which was done by naming the legislation in her proper name.
