Abstract

The objective of this study, of a qualitative approach is to discuss about the trade conducted by quileiros between the twin cities Aceguá (Brazil) and Aceguá (Uruguay). From the reading of the book Contos do país dos gaúchos of the Uruguayan writer Julián Murguía as a main reference, we discuss how is happening this other type of commercial activity, considered unofficial. The theoretical framework comes from Bakhtin (2000) and his contributions on otherness, Miotello (2005, 2009) on the concept of ideology, among other researchers. We observed with our analysis that although this type of trade is considered illegal and the individuals who practice it are persecuted, it is necessary for these people to survive, since the economic policy under MERCOSUR does not contemplate the vulnerable border populations.
