Abstract

The objective of this text is to reflect on the comic book Os Donos da Terra, made by Daniela Fernandes Alarcon, Glicéria Jesus da Silva and Vitor Flynn Paciornik, published in 2020 by the publisher Elefante. We seek to understand how the text/image relationship, research and fiction, stories and narratives constitute strategies of resistance and struggle. In the analysis, graphic solutions and elements of the comic book language were considered, such as the composition of the scenes, the layout of the pages, the characterization of the characters, the representation of time and space, the representation of the Tupinambá. The book builds multiple and contemporary perspectives on and with the Tupinambá of southern Bahia, juxtaposing different temporalities and spatialities, addressing land conflicts, difficulties, and tensions in defending territories, as well as parties, meetings, exchanges, and the affections. The effort to escape stereotypes, exoticism and the hierarchical classification of others ends up recreating the possibilities and conventions of comic book language. Academic and journalistic investigation and dialogue with the community are translated into images, which move us in time and space, exposing the violence of intercultural encounters, sharpening our senses to other possibilities of existence, to other perspectives of world. The scenes throw us into the dimension of work, of struggle and prayer, of the sacred and the symbolic, of the materialities and subjectivities of the Tupinambá people. Past and present are intertwined in everyday relationships between people, animals, supernatural beings, ancestors, enchanted people, nature, spirits.
