Abstract

The experiment aimed at determining the best sowing time, as well as the adaptation of onion cultivars for canning in the region of Marechal Cândido Rondon (Paraná, Brazil). The experimental delineation consisted of randomized blocks in a 4 X 3 factorial design, with four repetitions. The treatments were constituted by four sowing dates (28/06; 12/07; 26/07; 09/08) and three  cultivars (White Creole; Texas Grano - 502 and Granex 90). The analyses of variance and the comparisons between the averages of treatments were carried out by using Tukey’s test at the level of 5% of probability. The results indicated that the cultivars Granex 90 and Texas Grano - 502 had the shortest cycle and were the best adapted to the region. The cultivar White Creole obtained the best onion shape and diameter for canning, but showed lower productivity. The cultivar Texas Grano - 502 was the most commercially productive. The sowing dates showed no influence in the productivity.
