Abstract

Functions of the nitric oxide and its production sites in the ovary, relating especially to luteal function were reviewed. The cellular interactions within corpus luteum (CL) seem to be physiologically relevant for luteolytic and luteotrophic processes in this gland, and nitric oxide appears to act through multiple mechanisms to exert their full effects on CL function. The production and role of nitric oxide in the CL depend of the dose, estrous cycle stage and species, being dualistic, showing luteotrophic and luteolytic actions.
