Abstract

The urbanization process has built a uniquely Brazilian scenario of concentration / deconcentration of population in urban areas which are formed in some cases as important metropolis in national social and political context. However, after the 1988 Federal Constitution, the official creation of the metropolitan areas in the country became assignment of the States and, therefore, the criteria for defining the extent of these "cities" have  followed administrative political criteria. So, it does not consider criterias for intra-regional mobility that would allow us to identify the integration of municipalities in an urban agglomeration regarding the movement of people. Based on the concept of conurbation used by the Brazilian urban network research, published by IPEA, IBGE and Unicamp (2000), this paper discusses a methodology to analyze the Brazilian urban agglomerations using census data on commuting to incorporate (or not) cities that have a demographic integration. To do so, after a brief characterization of the profile of commuting, we used these commuting data to a regionalization proposal where the data considers the homogeneity of the region. Therefore, it is a methodological exercise with a simple exploratory analysis, but allows us to advance the discussion of analytical criteria for the metropolitan regions of Brazil.
