Resumo: A presente comunicação tem por objetivo apresentar a história da educação de surdos com o intuito de desmitificar as ideias presentes no nosso cotidiano que acabam por influenciar diretamente o contexto de sala de aula. Para atingir os objetivos, optou-se pela metodologia bibliográfca sobre os principais autores na área (SANCHEZ, 1990; MEADOW, 1980; MOURA, 2000; STOKOE, 1999; STROBEL, 2008). A partir de se compreender a importância histórica dos sujeitos surdos na sociedade, observamos que o professor ao ter esse conhecimento histórico consegue explicar de forma efetiva que as línguas de sinais são línguas que apresentam história, cultura e estrutura linguística e que sua falta de divulgação deve-se principalmente pelo um momento histórico mundial – Congresso de Milão – que oprimiu as línguas sinalizadas por 100 anos.
