O olhar do turista: lazer e viagens nas sociedades contemporâneas

Este livro de John Urry vem nos proporcionar reflexões mais recentes sobre o lazer, as férias, o prazer, o turismo e as viagens como fenômenos característicos da sociedade contemporânea que impulsionam milhares de pessoas à busca de experiências diferentes das decorrentes da vida cotidiana. O autor nos ajuda a entender como a imagem de um lugar visitado pode ser transformada e é influenciada pelas práticas sociais não turísticas através da oposição entre tempo de trabalho e tempo de lazer. No capítulo 1, então, o autor cita práticas que formam e elaboram o olhar do turista perante objetos não habituais e signos que identificam um determinado local, analisando e sintetizando mudanças iniciadas na Antigúidade referentes a práticas turísticas. Começamos então a perceber, a partir de suas descrições e de outros autores citados em sua obra, o intuito de avaliar o desenvolvimento do turismo na Inglaterra no século XVIII, bem como o início das viagens massificadas e a importância deste tipo de turismo para com a política de empregos que, necessariamente, culmina com um crescimento e uma maior probabilidade de investimentos no país, fazendo-se perceber ainda a avaliação da necessidade do aumento da infraestrutura para suprir a demanda local.
