O INDIVIDUALISMO E O SURGIMENTO DO ROMANCE

O surgimento do romance como um modelo de literatura narrativa, na virada do século do XVII para o século XVIII, está relacionado a uma conjunção de fatores que comumente se deno- mina modernidade. Dentre eles, encontram-se a crescente racio- nalização derivada do Iluminismo, o processo de secularização que a acompanha, como apontou Weber, e o próprio desenvolvi- mento do capitalismo, que ajudou a estabelecer as bases para a nova sociedade burguesa, nos termos de Marx. Evidentemente que esta afirmação pode ser contestada, no tocante às diferentes possibilidades de compreensão da relação entre as expressões artísticas o contexto histórico e cultural no qual são produzidas, problema queeste artigo não tem pretensões em discutir, embora tome como ponto de partida o suposto de que há aí relações de homologias constitutivas. O individualismo como uma ideologia e Valor estruturante da cultura moderna nessas relações é, portanto, a referência analítica adotada para o tema do surgimento do romance.
