Abstract

Objectives: To verify the prevalence of perinatal asphyxia cases admitted in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of University Hospital of Western Paraná and to investigate follow-up of the number of cases over the years. Methods: The population of the study was composed by neonates with perinatal asphyxia interned in the NICU of University Hospital of Western Paraná from January 2017 to December 2021. The data was collected through the verification of the sector's record books and medical records. The identified of perinatal asphyxia was based on the Apgar score, being considered asphyxia at birth scores ≤6 in the fifth minute of life. Results: In the study period, 15,15% of neonates admitted in the NICU of University Hospital of Western Paraná presented Apgar score ≤6 in the fifth minute of life. A significant increase in the number of cases was observed only in 2019, compared to previous years. There were no differences over the five years in the number of deaths. Conclusion: The prevalence of perinatal asphyxia cases admitted in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of University Hospital of Western Paraná was like another countries. The increase in asphyxiated neonates with an associated diagnosis of meconium fluid aspiration and congenital malformations in 2019 is one of the hypotheses for the rise in the number of cases this year.
