Patients with mental disorders, from the beginning, have experienced various difficulties, mistreatment and violation of their rights. In Brazil, after several atrocities committed against these individuals in mental hospitals, we had the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, which contributed to the closure of these hospitals, aiming at a better quality of life for people with mental illness and contributing to their inclusion in the social environment. Objective: To understand the life history and trajectory of psychiatric patients in Therapeutic Residences. Materials and methods: This is an integrative literature review, whose bibliographical survey will be in the databases: Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Studies published between 2000 and 2024 were included, considering the publication of Ordinance No. 106/2000, from the Ministry of Health, which introduces Therapeutic Residential Services within the scope of the SUS. Studies available in full were chosen, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Results: 4 studies that addressed the topic were used and a table was created containing the characteristics of the articles. Conclusion: Risk factors include sociodemographic factors, precarious socioeconomic conditions, family dysfunction, genetic factors, and gender. Reasons for hospitalization include psychotic symptoms, depression, suicidal ideation, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. The trajectories of patients discharged from psychiatric hospitals and living in therapeutic residences were marked by moments of fragility and loss.
