COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ADULT BODY COMPOSITION OBTAINED USING TWO DIFFERENT TETRAPOLAR BIOELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE ANALYZERS

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the agreement between measurements of body fat percentage (%BF), skeletal muscle mass percentage (%SMM), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) in adults obtained using two different tetrapolar bioelectrical impedance analyzers (Biodynamics 450® and OMRON HBF-514C®). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included a sample of 27 adults attending a nutrition outpatient clinic in Southwestern Paraná, Brazil, between August and December 2023. The paired Student’s t-test or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare measurements between the two analyzers. Agreement was assessed using the Bland–Altman method. Results: The sample consisted predominantly of women (85.19%), with men representing 14.81%, and a mean age of 36.29 ± 14.65 years. The OMRON HBF-514C® analyzer showed higher %BF values (p < 0.0001) and lower %SMM (p < 0.0001) and BMR (p = 0.0003) values compared with the Biodynamics 450® analyzer. Bland–Altman analysis revealed wide limits of agreement between the two devices. Conclusion: This study demonstrated significant differences in the mean values of %BF, %SMM, and BMR between the two bioelectrical impedance analyzers, indicating a lack of agreement between their measurements.
