The main objective of the present study is to analyze the maternal experiences of caring for a child with a disability. This text is a part of the research entitled “Socio-educational inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities: perceptions of mothers from APAE Salvador” in which the experience of atypical motherhood is portrayed and how it affects the relationships of mothers in various aspects of the social conjuncture such as marital relationship, self-care and comprehensive care for children with intellectual disabilities. The study, therefore, is qualitative with a phenomenological nature, as it perceives maternal care in this aspect as a social phenomenon that shows new developments of what it is to live with intellectual disability from the perspective of mothers. The results show that caring for a child with a disability is still seen as an exceptionally maternal responsibility that abdicates its own interests to fully dedicate itself to this predetermined role.
