Resumen: A lo largo de la frontera de Brasil se producen contactoslingüísticos entre el español y el portugués y en el norte del Uruguay se
habla un portugués vernacular ampliamente estudiado. En la mayoría de
los otros casos los residentes de países hispanoparlantes sólo emplean
el portugués con interlocutores brasileños, y se producen mezclas inconscientes
e involuntarias español-portugués que desafían los modelos
propuestos para la alternancia de códigos en comunidades bilingües.
Este trabajo presenta datos sobre el empleo del portugués en comunidades
fronterizas de Colombia, Perú, Bolivia, Paraguay y Argentina. Se
describe por primera vez otra variedad vernacular del portugués que se
habla dentro de un país hispanoparlante, en Misiones, Argentina.
