O presente artigo postula evidenciar a Educação do Campo como uma manifestação material de uma escola pública popular. Parte-se de uma referência marxiana contida em sua crítica ao Programa de Gotha, para refletir a essência da educação pública popular. O conjunto de reflexões aborda a concepção de Estado, para localizar o compromisso social frente à educação e a inserção da população na gestão do mesmo. Nesse sentido, a categoria autonomia é fundamental para relações entre sujeitos sociais e Estado. Também é necessário tratar dos limites da escola atual sob o Capital e a prática educativa popular, que aproxima escola e vida. Assim, a proposição efetuada alia-se ao pleito da escola pública popular, cujo conceito também é detalhado no presente texto. A prática da Educação do Campo é exposta com a finalidade de materializar tais princípios, tanto no plano formal, legal, como pedagógico e prático. Por fim, destaca-se a necessidade da inserção dos movimentos sociais – no qual a Educação do Campo é inserida – e suas dinâmicas na práxis educacional, fator preponderante na construção da educação popular.
