Abstract

Considering cultural plurality as the central aspect to be taken into account in the everyday institutional relations, the present study discusses theoretical and practical issues for thinking about the school as a multicultural organisation. It particularly focuses on the construction and reconstruction of black identity in that space, describing data from a case study that has been undertaken based on oral histories of black teachers. Its theoretical framework is based on three main categories: multiculturalism, black identity and multicultural organisations. The relevance of a multicultural school institutional identity and the understanding of everyday schooling in transformative approaches is highlighted, so as to try and minimize prejudices against black actors, therefore contributing to valuing cultural diversity and respect for plural identities.
