Abstract

This article reflects the role of teaching practice in the training of Visual Arts teachers at the Paraná Faculty of Arts, by focusing on the undergraduate course, the teaching of art in the schools, and the students’ narratives about their teaching practice in schools. The impact and the conflicts between the teacher education course and actual practice felt by the students and show the small contribution of the Visual Arts Program to prepare the students for the reality of professional life. The students found that art education is still intrinsically related to a chronological and euro-centric history of art and also that the fact that art classes have peripheral status in the schools’ curriculum, make it even more difficult for art education to be considered to be an important part of human development. This research demonstrates that Arts is not understood fully in the school environment, showing the need for changes towards undergraduate courses, so that it is emphasized the articulation between courses, teaching practice and schools, new sources of information and academic knowledge, professional reality and every day live in school.
