Abstract

The creation, in March of 1665, of the Philosophical Transactions magazine is considered the hallmark of science journalism in the world. In Brazil, the first steps in the field of science communication occurring in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, with the creation of the National Museum. The paving of a scientific culture is linked with the exercise of citizenship, and May contribute to the awareness and the emergence of demands not only in the realm of policy in science and technology but also in other fields. However, the field of dissemination and popularization of science and technology has intrinsic and extrinsic challenges. For example, the high coefficient of deprivation that affects the general public regarding in a scientific culture. And the mass media hasn't helped much to reverse this situation, although it has potential strong as ally of the dissemination and popularization of science.
