Abstract

The expansion of mass schooling in Portugal in the 1970’s and 1980’s and the gradual enlargement and diversification of teacher’s roles and functions in the 1980’s and 1990’s led the Government to formulate and implement a policy of systematic and compulsory in service teacher training. It will be analyzed the building up of the system, its development in the 1990’s and 2000’s and its effects in professional teacher development.
