Abstract

This research aims to reflect on the concepts of language present in theoretical discussions in the fields of Sociology, Linguistics and AL that underlie the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as well as to investigate how the authors of contemporary AL have addressed these concepts as a possible epistemological and methodological change in studies in AL. Enrolled in studies of qualitative nature, our research is organized as it follows: First, we present some paths taken by AL in Brazil and the influence carried out by Linguistics and other scientific fields in AL. Then, we approach the language concepts present in theoretical discussions of Sociology, Linguistics and LA fields, elucidate some characteristics of contemporary AL and how this research field has revised its epistemological and methodological foundations based on postmodern, post-colonial, post-structuralist, anti-racist, feminist and queer theories. Finally, we address some considerations about the paths taken by AL to its contemporary understanding of mixed research and hybrid area. We also comment on the role of language in this methodological and epistemological transition and envisage possible ways for this field that has shown its liquid characteristics and without a final destination.
